Listener No 4689, Great Western: A Setter’s Blog by Buff

I have always admired One-Eyed Jacks as a film ever since I first saw it as a student in Durham. It is the only film Brando directed, and although being a touch self-indulgent, it is, in my view, much superior to overrated Westerns such as The Searchers. Although I have played bridge for 60 years, I realised that I didn’t know without looking which of the knaves showed only one eye. The naval meaning of the phrase immediately suggested two more variations on the theme. I included a way of finding co-star Karl Malden since otherwise the penny-dropping might be too delayed.
If you get the chance, see the film!
