Listener 4808 One Other by Chalicea

I enjoyed One Other. It’s fairly common to encounter a layered solution, but much less common to encounter a layered theme. Thank you Chalicea for making the connection for us in this thematically rich puzzle and for introducing me to Shackleton’s supernatural but credible experience. The road to Emmaus is rather more familiar but no less thought-provoking!

My favourite clues were

  • 9ac WORRICOW “Nick in Glasgow or Royal Irish Constabulary to amaze guards” for its delectable answer and for cleverly linking Nick with constabulary whilst making Nick the first word to obscure its capitalisation.
  • 14ac ETHNIC “Concerning racy old letter – not entirely respectable – pure gelasticity
  • 27ac AIRDRY “Offhand involving doctor put on the line” which was straightforward but a lovely take on “put on the line”.

Not that there’s been a chance of putting anything on the line with these past months of almost non-stop rain. Spring is being most coquettish – appearing briefly and just as quickly disappearing. At least the Listener behaves more predictably – and isn’t weather-dependent.
